Coping with the Loss of your Grandmother
by: Betty from GriefandSympathy

Dear Sophie,

Sorry to hear about the sad loss of your beloved grandmother. You were very lucky to have had such a good relationship with her. She would have realised that you did not have as much time to spend with her as you got older.

If her loss is the first time you have experienced grief then it will be difficult for you. There is no time limit on grief and we never forget our loved ones. We learn to live without them. You will find that you can get on with your own precious life and know that she would have been proud of you.

Live your life for yourself, be kind to yourself and know that she would not have wanted you to feel guilty. You had your friends, work and a busy life. She will have known that you cared about her. She would have been pleased to know that you had a busy life and friends.

Anxiety is a part of the grief process. You will often think about her and often the tears will flow. This is normal. One day you will remember her love with wonder not grief.

Some find having a photo of the loved one around and talking to them helps. Others create an album of outings they had together.

Talk about your feelings to a trusted friend or your parents. You may relate to this story on our website about how one of our readers coped with the loss of her grandparents - Loss of Grandparents.
Also there are many pages on how to cope with the roller coaster of emotions we feel when we miss a loved one so much it hurts. Heartbroken is an adequate term. See How to Deal with Grief.

You will cope and enjoy your life again without her presence, your memories will always be there.

Our very best wishes
Betty
